Each week, 5ES and 5CD will have PE on a Monday afternoon and will need to come into school wearing PE kit. 5EJ and 5ER will have PE on Tuesday afternoon so will need to come into school in PE kit on Tuesdays.
Every Thursday, all classes will have a PE session with Mr Harrington and need to come into school wearing outdoor PE kit.

Literacy lessons are based on the books of Anthony Horowitz. The children enjoy reading and finding the features of his books and get to write their own mystery stories in the same style. Later in the term, Literacy lessons are linked to our topic, Ancient Greece. The children read Greek myths and write their own version. After half term, we focus on explanation texts, debating, writing letters and poetry. Daily reading lessons are based on a range of texts – we also expect children to read regularly at home. Maths lessons develop the children’s understanding of number and the four operations in line with the National Curriculum 14. The children are in sets for Maths, ensuring the work is pitched at the most appropriate level.
History lessons involve researching aspects of Ancient Greek life using a range of sources. We organise a special day of activities and workshops based on the Ancient Greeks run by the Portals Of The Past company; this makes the topic really come to life for the children. Geography lessons are based on developing map skills and finding out about Greece. In art lessons, children design, make and evaluate their own Greek pots and draw architecture using perspective.
Science lessons are based on materials, their properties and uses, including opportunities for planning and carrying out investigations. In ICT, children develop their programming and coding skills. The children swim every Tuesday before half term and develop ball games skills in PE. After half term, we move on to dance and continue ball games.
In RE, we learn about Sikhism. PSHE lessons involve discussions of human rights, stereotyping, relationships and the importance of a positive mindset in order to be a successful learner. Philosophy for Children (P4C) lessons help develop the children’s questioning and discussion skills through a range of stimuli. Our design and technology project after half term requires the children to make their own moving toys. All Year 5 pupils learn French throughout the term.
