Swimming

We are really fortunate to have Wickford swimming pool right next door to school, so children swim alternate half-terms from year 3 to year 6. As swimming is such an important life skill, we are proud that our children generally exceed the National Curriculum requirements within the first two years of lessons, so they are able to master the skills required for water safety and competition.

We compete in the annual School Sports Partnership gala against schools from Wickford, Billericay and South Woodham Ferrers.

Lessons are taught by Everyone Active’s qualified instructors so there is a small charge for which we are grateful for parents / carers contributions.

Every term children are assessed and awarded certificates as outlined below:

Swimming Stages

Stage 1 Can walk, hop, jump & spin in water.
Stage 2 Can float and move with or without swimming aids. Can propel using basic strokes.
Stage 3 Water Safety – can explain dangers of water and know how to keep safe & summon assistance. Can swim 10 metres on front & back.
Stage 4 Can swim 25 metres using recognised arm & leg actions. Can tread water or float for at least 30 secs. Can submerge completely underwater.
Stage 5 Water Safety – can assist others whilst maintaining own safety. Can perform a reaching & throwing rescue. Can explain how swimming is important and how to stay safe in cold water.
Stage 6 Can perform good stroke techniques and use these to play water sports. Can swim up to 100 metres.
Stage 7 Can perform good stroke techniques in all 3 strokes (front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke). Can swim up to 200 metres.
Competitve Levels
Stage 8 Can swim up to 400m with developing strength, stamina and speed in all strokes. Beginning to use race starts and tumble turns.
Stage 9 Can swim up to 800m with developing strength, stamina and speed in all strokes. Beginning to use race starts and tumble turns.
Stage 10 Can swim up to 1500m with developing strength, stamina and speed in all strokes. Beginning to use race starts and tumble turns.
